I have been using the demo versions of Orion Pro (since version 2.402 by Sonic Syndicate), now 2.5 and first the demo of FruityLoops 3.1.1 by Image Line until 18 months ago (now registered user) as well as just having upgraded to SONAR by Cakewalk (by TwelveToneSystems) , after trying the SONAR demo along side version Pro Audio 9.  Some of you might be interested to know that TwelveTone Systems started making the 1st .wav file audio sequencer called Cakewalk  (virtual tape recorders) for the PC-XT in 1986 and clones way back in 1985.
SONAR comes with the DreamStation limited demo that you can later upgrade.  DreamStation is a Virtual Synthesizer equipped with many knobs to twist and reveal wondrous sounds in our air....aah. The "limited" DreamStation demo is not really that limited, although you can't save changes to the preset instrument sounds, you can CAPTURE what you discover and record it live as a  .wav file while you play!  Of course you occasionally need to click "OK" (a NAG pop-up dialog box) at random intervals.  This particular version is known as DXi  [DirectX Instrument] - think Cubase VSTi technology, but with different programmed architecture and using MS DirectX technology.  OK, don't think Cubase, think Orion Pro.
Pete, leader of the SonicSyndicate's user's forum, has announced that programmer Rich is honing the details for the Orion Pro next version to be a host program to Rewire applications such as Steinberg's Reason!  Re-Wire is essentially a Virtual Patch Bay with Virtual Patch Cables allowing connectivity of various sound card I/O to various Audio Program I/O !

By the way, there also is a stand-alone version of DreamStation which will give you a better idea of what all the PATCHES sound like...and per usual on my site there are always "helper" programs waiting for all of you,

Later, I'll add more...
